Struggling author Richard Madoc visits Erasmus Fry, an elderlyformer writer who has imprisoned a Greek muse named Calliope inhis house. Fry transfers ownership of Calliope the Muse toMadoc, who discovers that by raping her, he receivesinspiration. He does this more than once, despite hispromises, until it becomes obvious he never intends to let hergo. Calliope sends a desperate plea to Morpheus, her formerhusband, who she has not seen since the tragic death of theirson Orpheus. Upon receiving her plea and learning of what hashappened to her, Morpheus becomes enraged and confronts Madoc.When he refuses to release Calliope, Morpheus punishes Madocwith an uncontrollable stream of ideas. Madoc soon freesCalliope, who asks Morpheus to lift his curse of Madoc.Morpheus lifts the curse of too many ideas, but Madoc findshimself unable to remember Calliope, Morpheus, or any of hisideas. Calliope vows to make sure what happened to her doesn'thappen to anyone else. She and Morpheus share a tender goodbyewith her expressing hope that sometime in the future, she canvisit him in his realm and they'll be able to grieve their sonproperly.
